Solve a savings target for an assumed month-end contribution

Estimate equal monthly additions from a target, current balance, horizon, and fixed nominal return assumption.

ERITHRA editorial3 min read

A target calculation can solve for the contribution instead of the future balance. The Savings Goal Calculator estimates equal additions at the end of each month, starting from your entered current savings. It assumes a constant annual return divided by twelve and reports a modeled monthly contribution.

Define the four inputs

Enter Target savings, Current savings, Months until target, and Assumed annual return (%), then choose Calculate. Target and current savings must be nonnegative. Months must be a whole number from 1 to 1,200, and the annual assumption must be from 0 to 100 percent.

Use the same currency or unit for both savings amounts. The calculator does not read account balances, retrieve an interest rate, or select a financial product. The annual percentage is an input assumption, and its division into twelve equal monthly rates is part of the mathematical model.

Work through a target example

Set target to 13,000, current savings to 1,000, horizon to 12 months, and annual assumption to 12%. The monthly rate r is 0.01. Current savings are projected to 1000 × 1.01^12, approximately 1,126.83. The remaining target must be supplied by the future value of the monthly additions.

For target G, current balance B, monthly rate r, and month count n, the contribution is (G − B × (1 + r)^n) × r / ((1 + r)^n − 1). Applying those example inputs produces a monthly contribution of approximately 936.19 after display rounding.

At zero return, the calculation simplifies to (target − current) / months. For a 12,000 target, zero current savings, and twelve months, that gives 1,000.00 per month. The implementation clamps negative contributions to zero when projected current savings already meet the target.

Preserve the timing and uncertainty

Contributions occur at month end, so the first addition grows for fewer periods than the starting balance. This differs from the SIP Calculator, which assumes beginning-of-month contributions. Match that timing when comparing results from different tools.

The model excludes changing or negative returns, missed additions, withdrawals, fees, taxes, and inflation. Its positive assumed rate is not a guarantee of growth, and a zero result does not establish that a real-world target is secured. Rounding the monthly amount can also leave a small mathematical difference at the end.

All calculation occurs in your browser without an account connection. Use the Compound Interest Calculator to inspect the growth of a single starting balance separately. Keep any saved result alongside its rate and timing assumptions so the number remains understandable when reviewed later.
