State whether the interval crosses midnight
The Time Duration Calculator subtracts one clock reading from another and optionally adds one day. Enter Start time and End time, then select End is on the next day when that describes the interval. The checkbox is an explicit part of the calculation, not a preference about displaying the answer.
If the end clock time is earlier and the checkbox is off, the tool reports an error. This helps catch an accidental reversal while leaving the overnight decision to you. It does not infer dates, time zones, breaks, or a payroll policy from the two times.
Calculate two hours, thirty minutes, and fifteen seconds
Set Start time to 22:45:30, End time to 01:15:45, and enable End is on the next day. Select Convert / calculate. The expected output is:
2h 30m 15s
The metrics show 2 hours, 30 minutes, 15 seconds, and 150.25 total minutes. The decimal portion of total minutes represents a fraction of a minute; .25 is 15 seconds, not 25 seconds.
Clear the checkbox and run again. The end time now lies earlier on the same assumed day, so an error is the expected result. For identical start and end times, the same-day result is zero; enabling next day makes it 24 hours.
Separate a duration from a billable amount
This calculator does not deduct meal breaks or round to a billing increment. If you need net work time, record each excluded interval separately and apply the policy used by your organization. Converting 150.25 minutes into a decimal-hour figure also requires dividing by 60; writing 2.30 hours would not represent 2 hours 30 minutes.
The next-day option adds exactly 86,400 seconds. It can describe an interval extending into the next calendar day, but it cannot represent multiple extra days. Use Date Difference Calculator for a separate count of calendar dates when the task spans a longer period.
Recognize the daylight-saving boundary
The input contains no date or zone, so daylight-saving transitions cannot be accounted for. A real overnight event on a clock-change date can have a different elapsed duration from simple wall-clock subtraction. Establish the actual instants with Time Zone Converter when that distinction matters.
The clock values are processed locally in your browser. Copy the start, end, and next-day assumption with the result so another reader can reproduce the calculation without guessing which midnight you meant.
